†Aptornis defossor (South Island Adzebill) was a large flightless bird endemic to the South Island of New Zealand. Weighing approximately 2–3kg with a large hooked bill, it was a carnivore-omnivore that excavated soil and wood for invertebrates and small animals. Extinct by approximately the 15th century CE, its bones are commonly found in South Island Moa-hunter archaeological sites.
