Charadriisimilis essexensis

Charadriisimilis essexensis

Charadriisimilis essexensis is an extinct plover-like bird (Charadriiformes) described from Eocene London Clay deposits of Essex, England. Its name means 'plover-similar from Essex.' A wader, it fed on small invertebrates along tidal mudflats and estuaries. This fossil contributes to documenting the early Palaeogene radiation of shorebirds in Europe. Its systematic placement within Charadriiformes is supported by tarsometatarsus proportions.
