†Aphanapteryx bonasia (Red Rail) was a flightless rail endemic to Mauritius, becoming extinct in the late 17th century. A medium-sized omnivore with a long decurved bill, it was easily hunted by sailors and introduced predators. Known from subfossil bones and early traveller accounts, it was one of the iconic bird species lost following European colonisation of the Mascarene Islands.
Diet & Feeding
Aphanapteryx bonasia was a meat-eating predator. Carnivorous dinosaurs were active hunters or scavengers, equipped with sharp teeth and claws for catching and consuming prey. They occupied the top of the food chain in their ecosystems.
