Aramidae

Aramidae

†Aramidae is the monotypic bird family containing only the living Limpkin (Aramus guarauna) and its fossil relatives. Known from Eocene to Recent deposits, Aramidae members are carnivore-omnivores specialising in aquatic snails and mussels. Fossil Aramidae from North America and elsewhere document the once-greater diversity of this gruiform lineage before modern species winnowing.
