Caprimulgus piurensis

Caprimulgus piurensis

† Caprimulgus piurensis is an extinct nightjar of the family Caprimulgidae from fossil deposits in Piura, Peru. An insectivorous bird, it would have hunted flying insects at dusk and dawn in arid or semi-arid habitats of coastal northwestern South America. Its description from Peruvian fossil material documents nightjar diversity in South America through the Quaternary and offers data on the historical distribution of caprimulgids in the Neotropical region.
