Confuciusornis sanctus

Confuciusornis sanctus

The type species of Confuciusornis, C. sanctus ('holy Confucius bird') was described in 1995 from the Yixian Formation of Liaoning, China. Thousands of specimens — some preserving feathers, soft tissue, and stomach contents — reveal a sparrow-sized bird to crow-sized avian with a toothless beak, short round wings, and two tail ribbons, offering extraordinary insight into Early Cretaceous bird biology.

Diet & Feeding

Carnivore

Time Period

Cretaceous Early Mesozoic Era

Confuciusornis sanctus lived during the Cretaceous Early period of the Mesozoic Era, approximately 145,0 to 100,5 million years ago.

The Cretaceous saw continued dinosaur evolution with the rise of ornithopods and early ceratopsians. Flowering plants first appeared and began to transform terrestrial ecosystems. Spinosaurus and other large theropods lived during this time.
