An extinct flightless seabird from Japan, Copepteryx hexeris belongs to Plotopteridae, an extinct family of large wing-propelled diving birds convergent with penguins. A carnivorous pursuit-diver from Oligocene Japanese marine deposits, it could reach the size of a large penguin and filled a similar ecological niche in the North Pacific to penguins in the Southern Ocean.
