Ducula shutleri

Ducula shutleri

†Ducula shutleri is an extinct imperial pigeon from prehistoric Tonga, described from subfossil deposits. This large herbivorous columbid fed on fruits and seeds of Tongan forests. Its extinction, coinciding with Lapita cultural expansion (~3,000 years BP), illustrates the vulnerability of island pigeons to human hunting and deforestation across the Pacific.
