Arthrodytes

Arthrodytes

†Arthrodytes was an extinct penguin genus from Paleogene Argentina, contributing to the remarkable early Cenozoic diversification of penguins in the South Atlantic. A carnivorous diving seabird feeding on fish and squid, it was part of the initial Eocene radiation of penguins following their divergence from flying ancestors. Its South American fossils complement the New Zealand-Antarctic record of early penguin evolution.
