Berruornis halbedeli is an extinct owl from Late Cretaceous or Paleocene deposits of Germany. This carnivorous strigiform is among the oldest known owls and provides critical evidence for the deep Mesozoic or early Cenozoic origin of Strigiformes. Its discovery challenges assumptions about owl origins in North America and highlights the importance of the European fossil record.
