Delphinornis arctowskii

Delphinornis arctowskii

†Delphinornis arctowskii is an extinct species of early penguin named after Polish oceanographer Henryk Arctowski. Recovered from Eocene La Meseta Formation of Seymour Island, this fish-eating flightless bird inhabited early Paleogene Antarctic waters. Its wing-flipper proportions illuminate the transition from aerial to aquatic locomotion in penguin evolution.
