Aptornis defossor

†Aptornis defossor (South Island Adzebill) was a large flightless bird endemic to the South Island of New Zealand. Weighing approximately 2–3kg with a large hooked bill, it was a carnivore-omnivore that excavated soil and wood for invertebrates and small animals. Extinct by approximately the 15th century CE, its bones are commonly found in South Island Moa-hunter archaeological sites.

Aptornis defossor was a meat-eating predator. Carnivorous dinosaurs were active hunters or scavengers, equipped with sharp teeth and claws for catching and consuming prey. They occupied the top of the food chain in their ecosystems.
