Cathartes fossilis

Cathartes fossilis

† Cathartes fossilis is an extinct New World vulture of the genus Cathartes (family Cathartidae) from the Pleistocene of Argentina. New World vultures are primarily carrion feeders that locate food by smell — unusual among birds. This extinct species likely soared over Pleistocene Patagonian landscapes, scavenging the carcasses of megafauna such as ground sloths and glyptodonts. Its discovery extends the fossil record of Cathartes into South America's Pleistocene.
