† Cathartornis gracilis is an extinct New World vulture from the Pleistocene of the United States. A slender ('gracilis') carrion-feeding bird related to the turkey vulture lineage, it likely soared on thermals over open habitats, locating carcasses using its keen sense of smell. Its presence in Pleistocene North America alongside giant condors and teratorns indicates a rich guild of scavenging raptors adapted to feeding on the abundant megafauna of the Pleistocene epoch.
Diet & Feeding
Cathartornis gracilis was a meat-eating predator. Carnivorous dinosaurs were active hunters or scavengers, equipped with sharp teeth and claws for catching and consuming prey. They occupied the top of the food chain in their ecosystems.
