Cepphus olsoni

Cepphus olsoni

† Cepphus olsoni is an extinct guillemot from the Pliocene or Pleistocene of the United States, named in honor of avian palaeontologist Storrs Olson. A member of the diving auk family Alcidae, it was a carnivorous seabird that pursued fish underwater in coastal North Pacific waters. Its fossil material from the western United States contributes to the Pliocene-Pleistocene record of North Pacific alcid diversity and helps trace the historical biogeography of the Cepphus lineage.
