Cerorhinca minor

Cerorhinca minor

Cerorhinca minor is an extinct, smaller relative of the rhinoceros auklet (Alcidae), known from fossil deposits in Mexico. Smaller than its living cousin, it likely inhabited Pacific coastal waters and dove for fish and squid. The species name minor directly references its reduced body size relative to congeners. Its discovery in Mexico extends the known Neogene range of this alcid lineage into Central American latitudes.
