Teratornis merriami is the best-known teratorn, recovered in large numbers from the La Brea Tar Pits of California. This enormous soaring bird had a wingspan of approximately 3.5 meters and fed on megafaunal carcasses during the Pleistocene.

Teratornis merriami was a meat-eating predator. Carnivorous dinosaurs were active hunters or scavengers, equipped with sharp teeth and claws for catching and consuming prey. They occupied the top of the food chain in their ecosystems.
