A long, backward-curving crest is the hallmark of Parasaurolophus walkeri, a duck-billed hadrosaur of the Late Cretaceous. The crest was hollow, and its internal tubes likely acted as a resonating chamber that produced low, carrying calls for communication among herds. Reaching about 9.5 meters and near 2,500 kilograms, this herbivore could move on two legs or all fours and lived roughly 100 to 66 million years ago. William Parks described it in 1922 from Alberta, Canada. Its trombone-like headgear has made it one of the most recognizable hadrosaurs and a favorite subject for reconstructing the sounds extinct dinosaurs may have made.
