Aegotheles novaezealandiae, the New Zealand Owlet-nightjar, is an extinct bird that lived on New Zealand until the late Holocene (~1400 CE). Much larger than living owlet-nightjars (~30cm), it was a nocturnal insectivore of New Zealand forests. It went extinct following Polynesian settlement due to habitat loss and predation by rats and dogs.
Diet & Feeding
Aegotheles novaezealandiae primarily fed on insects and other small invertebrates. Insectivorous dinosaurs were typically small-bodied and agile, with adaptations suited for catching small prey.
