Cygnus herenthalsi

Cygnus herenthalsi is an extinct swan (Anatidae) from Neogene deposits of Belgium, contributing to the record of Early Neogene waterfowl in northwestern Europe. A large herbivorous aquatic bird, it grazed on submerged and emergent vegetation in warm Miocene fluvial and estuarine environments. Named for the Belgian locality of Herentals, it represents the early evolutionary history of the Cygnus lineage on the European continent before the onset of Quaternary glaciations.
