† Gastornis — an Eocene large flightless bird genus from North America, Europe, and Asia. Giant herbivore (~1.75 m tall, ~170 kg) with an enormous crushing beak initially thought predatory but likely used for cracking nuts and seeds. Stable isotopes confirm herbivory. Went extinct in the Eocene.
