<dinofyi-dinosaur slug="gastornis"></dinofyi-dinosaur>† Gastornis — an Eocene large flightless bird genus from North America, Europe, and Asia. Giant herbivore (~1.75 m tall, ~170 kg) with an enormous crushing beak initially thought predatory but likely used for cracking nuts and seeds. Stable isotopes confirm herbivory. Went extinct in the Eocene.
Diet & Feeding
Gastornis was a plant-eating dinosaur. Herbivores typically fed on ferns, cycads, conifers, and other vegetation available during their era. Many herbivorous dinosaurs developed specialized teeth and digestive systems for processing tough plant material.
