Apteribis

Apteribis

†Apteribis was a flightless ibis genus endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, known from subfossil deposits on Maui and Molokai. A long-billed probing herbivore-omnivore foraging for invertebrates in forest litter, it became extinct following Polynesian colonisation around 1,000 years ago. Its flightlessness evolved in the absence of terrestrial predators in the predator-free Hawaiian Islands.
