<dinofyi-dinosaur slug="aptornis"></dinofyi-dinosaur>†Aptornis was a flightless adzebill endemic to New Zealand, representing a distinct and ancient lineage within or near Gruiformes. A large, robust carnivore-omnivore with a massive hooked bill used to probe soil and rotting wood for invertebrates and small vertebrates, it became extinct following Polynesian and European settlement. Subfossil remains are widespread across both islands of New Zealand.
Diet & Feeding
Aptornis was a meat-eating predator. Carnivorous dinosaurs were active hunters or scavengers, equipped with sharp teeth and claws for catching and consuming prey. They occupied the top of the food chain in their ecosystems.
