<dinofyi-dinosaur slug="balaeniceps-rex"></dinofyi-dinosaur>Balaeniceps rex, the shoebill, is a large carnivorous bird native to tropical East Africa including Uganda. Reaching over 1.2 m tall with a distinctive enormous shoe-shaped bill, it stalks lungfish and other large prey in papyrus swamps. Although alive today, subfossil shoebill material has been recovered, documenting its persistence in African wetland environments.
Diet & Feeding
Balaeniceps rex was a meat-eating predator. Carnivorous dinosaurs were active hunters or scavengers, equipped with sharp teeth and claws for catching and consuming prey. They occupied the top of the food chain in their ecosystems.
