Brontornis burmeisteri is an extinct giant flightless bird from Miocene deposits of Patagonia, Argentina. Long classified as the largest phorusrhacid terror bird, recent analyses suggest it was actually a gigantic herbivorous anseriform (waterfowl relative). Reaching over 150 kg, it is one of the heaviest birds known and inhabited open grasslands and shrublands of Patagonian Miocene environments.
Diet & Feeding
Brontornis burmeisteri was a plant-eating dinosaur. Herbivores typically fed on ferns, cycads, conifers, and other vegetation available during their era. Many herbivorous dinosaurs developed specialized teeth and digestive systems for processing tough plant material.
