Chaetoptila is an extinct genus of large Hawaiian honeyeater-like birds (family uncertain), known from skeletal remains recovered from lava tubes and cave deposits of the Hawaiian Islands. Estimated at roughly 30 cm in length, it was likely a nectarivore or frugivore. The genus became extinct following Polynesian settlement of Hawaii, driven by habitat destruction and hunting. Its relationship to mainland families remains debated.
Diet & Feeding
Chaetoptila was a meat-eating predator. Carnivorous dinosaurs were active hunters or scavengers, equipped with sharp teeth and claws for catching and consuming prey. They occupied the top of the food chain in their ecosystems.
