A Pleistocene vulture from Shasta County, California, Coragyps shastensis is an extinct species from the New World vulture genus Coragyps. A large carnivorous scavenger from North American Quaternary deposits, it is part of a diverse fossil vulture assemblage documenting the rich raptor fauna that exploited Pleistocene megafaunal communities before the end-Pleistocene extinctions.
Diet & Feeding
Coragyps shastensis was a meat-eating predator. Carnivorous dinosaurs were active hunters or scavengers, equipped with sharp teeth and claws for catching and consuming prey. They occupied the top of the food chain in their ecosystems.
