†Dromas ardeola is an extinct relative of the living crab-plover (Dromas ardeola) documented from Quaternary deposits of Madagascar. The living species is the sole member of Dromadidae, known for its unique habit of nesting in burrows. Subfossil material from Madagascar expands the historical range of this specialized crustacean-feeding shorebird beyond its current Indian Ocean distribution.
