Anhinga rufa

Anhinga rufa

†Anhinga rufa (African Darter) has subfossil remains recorded from Kenya, representing the deep evolutionary history of this piscivorous diving bird in East Africa. It uses its sharp, spear-like bill to impale fish underwater, then surfaces to swallow and dry its wings. Subfossil specimens help reconstruct Quaternary African freshwater avifaunas.
