Bugeranus carunculatus, the wattled crane, is the largest crane species in Africa and one of the tallest flying birds on the continent. It inhabits wetlands and floodplains of sub-Saharan Africa, feeding primarily on sedge corms, rhizomes, aquatic invertebrates, and small vertebrates. Fossil material from South Africa documents its Pleistocene presence. Its distinctive red facial wattles and long neck are notable morphological features.
