Ceratosuchops inferodios

Ceratosuchops inferodios

† Ceratosuchops inferodios ('horned crocodile-faced hell heron') was a spinosaurid theropod from the Early Cretaceous Wessex Formation of the Isle of Wight, England. Approximately 9 m long, this bony-crested, semi-aquatic carnivore bore a long, low skull adapted for catching fish and other prey at water margins, similar to a heron's ambush strategy. Described in 2021 alongside Riparovenator, it represents one of Europe's most complete spinosaurid discoveries and clarifies European spinosaurid diversity.

Diet & Feeding

Carnivore

Ceratosuchops inferodios was a meat-eating predator. Carnivorous dinosaurs were active hunters or scavengers, equipped with sharp teeth and claws for catching and consuming prey. They occupied the top of the food chain in their ecosystems.

Time Period

Cretaceous Early Mesozoic Era

Ceratosuchops inferodios lived during the Cretaceous Early period of the Mesozoic Era, approximately 145,0 to 100,5 million years ago.

The Cretaceous saw continued dinosaur evolution with the rise of ornithopods and early ceratopsians. Flowering plants first appeared and began to transform terrestrial ecosystems. Spinosaurus and other large theropods lived during this time.
