† Fukuipteryx prima — an Early Cretaceous pygostylian bird from Japan's Kitadani Formation. Among the earliest birds with a pygostyle (fused tail vertebrae). Small carnivorous avian; the pygostyle enabled modern-style tail-fan flight control. Represents early avian evolution in the Japanese archip.
