†Anthropornis grandis was one of the largest penguins ever to have lived, from the Eocene of Antarctica. Standing approximately 1.7m tall and weighing around 90kg, it was a formidable deep-diving fish hunter. Discovered on Seymour Island, Antarctica, in Eocene marine deposits, it exemplifies the giant penguin radiation that preceded the modern lineage's origin.
