Micrathene whitneyi is the Elf Owl, the world's smallest owl at only 14cm and 40g. Nesting in abandoned woodpecker holes in saguaro cacti and other desert trees, this tiny raptor of the southwestern US and Mexico feeds almost exclusively on insects and scorpions.
