Therizinosaurus

Therizinosaurus cheloniformis

Claws reaching up to a meter in length, the longest of any known animal, define Therizinosaurus cheloniformis. Though it belonged to the theropods, the group that includes most meat-eating dinosaurs, this roughly 10-meter, 5,000-kilogram giant was a plant-eater that likely used its enormous claws to gather vegetation or fend off predators. Evgeny Maleev described it in 1954 from the Nemegt Formation of Mongolia, where it lived during the Late Cretaceous, roughly 100 to 66 million years ago. Its combination of a herbivorous diet with a predatory ancestry makes it one of the most anatomically surprising dinosaurs ever discovered.

Cretaceous Late Mesozoic Era
