Crossvallia waiparensis is a giant extinct penguin (Sphenisciformes) from the late Palaeocene Waipara Greensand of New Zealand, estimated at 1.6 m tall and 70–80 kg. A contemporaneous relative of C. unienwillia from Antarctica, it inhabited the warm shallow seas surrounding proto-New Zealand. A piscivore, it used its powerful flippers and robust bill to pursue fish. Its discovery supports a rapid early Palaeocene radiation of large-bodied penguin forms in the Southern Ocean.
Diet & Feeding
Crossvallia waiparensis was a meat-eating predator. Carnivorous dinosaurs were active hunters or scavengers, equipped with sharp teeth and claws for catching and consuming prey. They occupied the top of the food chain in their ecosystems.
