Crossvallia waiparensis

Crossvallia waiparensis

Crossvallia waiparensis is a giant extinct penguin (Sphenisciformes) from the late Palaeocene Waipara Greensand of New Zealand, estimated at 1.6 m tall and 70–80 kg. A contemporaneous relative of C. unienwillia from Antarctica, it inhabited the warm shallow seas surrounding proto-New Zealand. A piscivore, it used its powerful flippers and robust bill to pursue fish. Its discovery supports a rapid early Palaeocene radiation of large-bodied penguin forms in the Southern Ocean.
