Chalcomitra balfouri

Chalcomitra balfouri

Chalcomitra balfouri, Balfour's sunbird, is an extinct species of sunbird (Nectariniidae) endemic to Socotra Island, Yemen, known from subfossil skeletal material and historical records. A nectarivore and occasional insect-feeder, it exploited the island's unique flora. The species is named after Robert Balfour, a collector associated with early Socotran surveys. Its extinction likely resulted from introduced goats overgrazing endemic plant communities.
