Colymboides metzleri

Colymboides metzleri

An extinct small loon from Germany, Colymboides metzleri is known from Paleogene or Neogene German deposits. A carnivorous diving bird allied to modern loons (Gaviidae), it was likely a freshwater or coastal fish-hunter. German fossil loons such as this species document the Cenozoic diversification of gaviiform birds across Europe.
