Conuropsis carolinensis

Conuropsis carolinensis

The Carolina parakeet, Conuropsis carolinensis, was the only native parrot of eastern North America and became extinct in the early 20th century, with the last confirmed individual dying in 1918. A social, seed-eating bird of riparian forests, it was heavily persecuted by farmers and collectors. Subfossil bones extend its record into the Pleistocene of the United States.
