Alca grandis

Alca grandis

Alca grandis is an extinct large auk from the Pliocene (~3-4 Ma) of England. Larger than the modern Razorbill, it was a seabird of the North Atlantic that dove for fish. Known from the Coralline and Red Crag formations of East Anglia, it was described by Lydekker in the 19th century. It represents a lineage of large Pliocene Alca auks that preceded modern species.
