†Apus balstoni was an extinct swift (family Apodidae) from Madagascar, known from Holocene subfossil deposits. An insectivorous aerial predator, it captured flying insects in open skies above Malagasy habitats. Its extinction, possibly correlated with human colonisation of Madagascar around 1,500 years ago, represents one of several swift losses across the Indian Ocean island region.
Diet & Feeding
Apus balstoni primarily fed on insects and other small invertebrates. Insectivorous dinosaurs were typically small-bodied and agile, with adaptations suited for catching small prey.
