†Archaeotrogon zitteli was an extinct trogon from Eocene-Oligocene France (Quercy phosphorites), named in honor of palaeontologist Karl von Zittel. An insectivore-frugivore inhabiting the subtropical forests of Paleogene Europe, it documents a time when trogons were components of European avifaunas. Its fossils illuminate the biogeographic history of trogon birds before their subsequent extinction from temperate regions.
Diet & Feeding
Archaeotrogon zitteli primarily fed on insects and other small invertebrates. Insectivorous dinosaurs were typically small-bodied and agile, with adaptations suited for catching small prey.
