†Dinornis struthoides is an extinct moa species from New Zealand, described from partial skeletal material. One of the first moa named by Richard Owen in 1843, it contributed to establishing the giant moa as one of the tallest birds to have evolved. Its struthious (ostrich-like) epithet reflects early comparisons with other large ratites.
Diet & Feeding
Dinornis struthoides was a plant-eating dinosaur. Herbivores typically fed on ferns, cycads, conifers, and other vegetation available during their era. Many herbivorous dinosaurs developed specialized teeth and digestive systems for processing tough plant material.
