Dromornis stirtoni

Dromornis stirtoni

†Dromornis stirtoni ('Stirton's thunder bird') is an enormous dromornithid from the Late Miocene of Australia and potentially one of the largest birds ever to have lived, estimated at ~500 kg and ~3 m tall. Named after paleontologist Ruben Stirton, this powerful herbivore's massive hooked bill was once thought carnivorous but isotopic evidence now supports plant-eating.

Diet & Feeding

Herbivore

Dromornis stirtoni was a plant-eating dinosaur. Herbivores typically fed on ferns, cycads, conifers, and other vegetation available during their era. Many herbivorous dinosaurs developed specialized teeth and digestive systems for processing tough plant material.
