Nigersaurus

Nigersaurus taqueti

A broad, straight-edged muzzle holding more than 500 teeth arranged in as many as 68 replaceable columns gave Nigersaurus taqueti a feeding apparatus unlike any other sauropod. Its skull was habitually oriented toward the ground, indicating a low browser that cropped soft vegetation close to the surface, and its bones were remarkably thin and delicate. Roughly 9 meters long and near 4,000 kilograms, this herbivore was small for a sauropod. Paul Sereno and colleagues described it in 1999 from the Elrhaz Formation of Niger, dating to the Early Cretaceous, roughly 145 to 100 million years ago, and it has become a showcase for extreme dental specialization.
