<dinofyi-dinosaur slug="aptenodytes-ridgeni"></dinofyi-dinosaur>†Aptenodytes ridgeni was an extinct giant penguin closely related to modern Emperor and King Penguins, from Pliocene or Pleistocene New Zealand. Significantly larger than living Aptenodytes species, it was a deep-diving piscivore of cold southern waters. Its discovery in New Zealand Tertiary deposits extends the fossil record of the Emperor-King Penguin lineage well beyond the modern distribution.
Diet & Feeding
Aptenodytes ridgeni was a meat-eating predator. Carnivorous dinosaurs were active hunters or scavengers, equipped with sharp teeth and claws for catching and consuming prey. They occupied the top of the food chain in their ecosystems.
