Burhinus oedicnemus

Burhinus oedicnemus, the Eurasian thick-knee or stone-curlew, is a large, cryptically patterned wading bird of open dry habitats across Europe, North Africa, and Asia. A carnivore feeding on insects, earthworms, small reptiles, and rodents, it is largely crepuscular and nocturnal. Fossil material from Portugal documents its presence through the Pleistocene of southern Europe. It is notable for its large yellow eyes and distinctive haunting calls.
