An extinct carnivorous bird from Australia, Chionoides australiensis belongs to a group allied to sheathbills (Chionidae). Its Australian fossil record indicates that sheathbill-like birds once inhabited southern Gondwanan landmasses, and the species provides paleobiogeographic context for the evolution of modern sub-Antarctic avifauna.
Diet & Feeding
Chionoides australiensis was a meat-eating predator. Carnivorous dinosaurs were active hunters or scavengers, equipped with sharp teeth and claws for catching and consuming prey. They occupied the top of the food chain in their ecosystems.
