Chebsaurus algeriensis

Chebsaurus algeriensis

† Chebsaurus algeriensis is a basal sauropod dinosaur from the Middle Jurassic Tiourarén Formation of Algeria. Named after a local Tamazight word for a large animal, it is estimated at 15 m in length and represents one of the few dinosaurs described from North Africa's Jurassic record. A herbivore that browsed on conifers and cycads, it inhabited the coastal plains and river valleys bordering the Tethys Sea. Its discovery highlights the diversity of Gondwanan sauropods.

Diet & Feeding

Herbivore

Chebsaurus algeriensis was a plant-eating dinosaur. Herbivores typically fed on ferns, cycads, conifers, and other vegetation available during their era. Many herbivorous dinosaurs developed specialized teeth and digestive systems for processing tough plant material.

Time Period

Jurassic Middle Mesozoic Era

Chebsaurus algeriensis lived during the Jurassic Middle period of the Mesozoic Era, approximately 174,7 to 161,5 million years ago.

Dinosaur diversity continued to increase, with the evolution of large sauropods and diverse theropods. Stegosaurs first appeared, and the supercontinent Pangaea was breaking apart.
