†Dinornis ('terrible bird') is the genus of the giant moa, among the tallest birds ever known, from New Zealand. Standing up to 3.6 m tall, these herbivorous ratites browsed on shrubs and trees. Dinornis survived until ~1440 CE before being hunted to extinction by Māori settlers, representing one of the most iconic cases of prehistoric avian extinction.
Diet & Feeding
Dinornis was a plant-eating dinosaur. Herbivores typically fed on ferns, cycads, conifers, and other vegetation available during their era. Many herbivorous dinosaurs developed specialized teeth and digestive systems for processing tough plant material.
